Question for bilingual parents….?

January 18th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Bilingual Parenting

Are you raising your child to speak all languages that you and/or your partner know? Why or why not?

As for my husband and I, we both speak fluent Spanish and English and are raising our baby to speak both. She is only 10 months old but shows understanding of both as we speak both to her equally. What are your methods?

dad is from Norway and Im Irish .We got her baby books in both languages and he talks to her in Norwegian and I talk a bit to her in Irish .But our home language is English .So its a bit of all 3 .Why we do it ? Im Irish its my heritage and hers .Norwegian as her family from that side I want her to be able to talk with her family and we spend Holidays there.

We honestly tried to teach our kids both Inupiat and ASL (American Sign Language) but we basically only ended up teaching them enough to yell at them in public with no one catching on. They know a smattering of each but they can’t converse.

I have no kids but i take care of a little girl who is two right now and i’ve been taking care of her since she’s was10 months old i speak to her in both english and spanish and she does so well. She speaks both now and she is very smart.

I think that is an awesome thing you are doing with your baby and i know she will grow up to be smart as well. I think you should keep it up and soon she will be able to learn a third language!!

    Good. Luck!!!
