Question by Amy C: What are some fun games for kids while camping?
My husband and I are planing a camping trip with or kids but we can’t think of games to play. We have 4 boys ages 6, 5, 3, and 2.We were looking for some games for then to play to help to keep them from getting bored. Help please.

How about a scavenger hunt for specific leaves, bark, etc from plants around your area. You could get a book of what is prevalent in the area where you will be camping and have each child find specific items. With different lists, you could customize each one to the child’s age. For instance, with a picture, the 5&6 year old might be able to find an oak leaf. the younger ones might just have to find a green leaf.
My dad taught me to recognize what trees, bark, berries, etc. went with each kind of tree in the area where I grew up with this sort of game. I still remember how fun it was.
They might enjoy having sand shovels, etc. for dirt digging too. Some guys that age like to dig for imaginary dinosaurs.
Mostly, just have fun discovering tracks, flowers, berries, etc. and exploring the great outdoors. Kids love to help gather stuff to build a fire if you let them put the twigs in before you light the fire.
In fact, your older boys might enjoy helping to make a hobo stove to cook on while camping. I’ve put a link below to show you how. You could help them make it before you leave (only takes about 15 mintues) and they could gather twigs to cook hot dogs (or whatever) over it in camp. (charcoal for a backup is a good idea in case all the twigs are soaking wet.
Your oldest boy (your husband) might enjoy making the alcohol stove. I’ll leave a link for it too.
Also, just in case of bad weather, be sure to take card games like go fish for tent playing.

This is a bit like the previous answer, but what the hell =)
I play this with my cubs and scouts, and even the beavers join in, so good for any ages. Like the scavenger hunt but this is the alphabet scavenger hunt. If you haven’t guessed it already, each child or they could work in twos, have they wander off and find something beginning with each letter of the alphabet, the tricker bit is they can only use one thing once. they could use a blade of grass for either b (blade) g (grass or green) but not for both to make it more challenging =)
or you could go to a camping stores and most of them sell ‘big games’ for outdoor use, like big jenga, dominos or chess sets.
another option, but tend to have to buy, is bug catchers. get the boys intreseted in insects, or take paper and wax crayons and do tree rubbings

Kids love to gather wood for the fire and play horseshoes. And they really love sitting by the fire at night and hear stories,then have them make up their own stories. Most like to play ball with a plastic bat and ball. We sometime use a wadded up paper cup for the ball as it does not go very far and will not hurt or anything. We call it cut ball,we learned it at the ball park. A DVD player and a couple of easy and fast board games are fun. You can also do something as simple as using a jar and giving each child so many cloths pens and see who can stand over the jar and drop the most in. It is all so exciting to this age of child that almost anything is fun. Oh and watch out for the coons because they love to get in your trash bag so hang it high. Oh what fun I wish I could go. Have a great time because the memories will last a life time.
