Whats the difference on the kids activities between Day Care and PreSchool?

January 18th, 2009 · 10 Comments · Kids Activities

My niece is going to a pre school from 7am till 5pm and its facility is quite far from the place they are living where in fact there is a Day Care center close to their home.

A quality Day Care offers the same sort of curriculum as a good Preschool but is all day and may also enroll infants and toddlers. There are very good day preschools and bad preschools and very good day cares and bad day cares. Each family needs to decide what meets the needs of their child. The fact that your niece is in care 10 hours a day indicates that she is, in fact, enrolled in a day care center which chooses to call itself a full day preschool. Any program that keeps kids for that many hours must be licensed as a day care no matter what it is called.

To truly be a pre school it is certified by the state board of educations and has licensed teachers who are endorsed in early childhood.

It depends there may be more learning going on at the pre-school, where the day care there are activities but no learning is going on. But, it also depends on the day care, some Day Care centers do have learning activities. There must be a reason why your nieces parents made the decision.

With a quality day care…very few differences should be observed. Being that she attends a “preschool” 7-5…my thinking is that it’s actually a daycare with “preschool” in it’s name. The day care probably has a preschool program as well. Check it out. Preschool should have a lead teacher who has a minimum of an associate’s in child development.

Day cares do not have a curriculum. The children are pretty much just watched after like a babysitter. Pre Schools provide learning. Not all preschools have certified teachers I have been a preschool teacher since I was 18 with no schooling. I have no certificate.

Day Care has the sole purpose of caring for the child during the day. The best ones have learning included throughout the day. But technically they could just plop your niece in front of the TV and feed her and be fine.

PreSchool is a licensed school that aims to teach the child. Sometimes they are religious, so one might take that into account.

However the descriptions are some good day care centers and bad preschools are pretty interchangeable, so you might want to look into the learning benifits before decideing to either stay or change schools.

It depends on the daycare center. Were I used to work the pre-k teachers dumpted toys at the table and the kids played all day and did an art activity. A pre school is more structured and the teachers have to cover certain things i.e know numbers and letters etc. It is basically more strutured.

Each facility is different. And a center can say that they are a preschool but you have to really make sure that they follow through with that. I work at a child development center that provides child care. I am the preschool 4′s teacher, and we provide preschool within an all day program. I have my bachelors degree, and i am currently working on my master’s in early childhood education. Not all centers are the same! So the day care that is closer to their home may not offer what they are looking for.

Like others have said it all depends on the quality of the environment. If the center is called a preschool and runs that long of hours, they either offer a full day program or extended care. Either way it is probably more structured than daycare.
Even though the definitions of daycare and preschool are quite different, many people don’t take the time to understand and lump them all together.
While a preschool teacher may not have to have an associates or bachelor’s degree, researach shows that the education level of the teacher makes a difference in the preschooler’s future educational success.

It is generally the amount of education that the teacher has. Day care is generally a two year qualification (Australia) and preschool is between 3-4 years.
