Do kids learn to read and write simultanously at school or are they taught one first and then another?
In NY, kids learn to read and write simultaneously, though reading comes before writing, naturally. In kindergarten students will write a sentence to go along with an illustration they draw. They also will complete phonics activities/worksheets. In 1st grade they rely more heavily on phonics exercises, and they begin to write short 2-4 sentence "paragraphs." At least this is how they do it in my section on NY!
