May 8th, 2009 · No Comments · Kids and Pets

A christening is a blessed event in a familys life. It signifies not only the birth of a child into a Christian home but the ongoing commitment to their Christian faith. An Irish christening is no different in beliefs but the traditions are uniquely their own. It is an experience to remember and be celebrated in style.

Picking out a christening gown may not seem like a difficult task but when traditions are involved it can complicate matters greatly. The gown chosen will symbolize the childs purity as they take the first ceremonial steps into a life-long faith relationship. Christening gowns are in abundance however Irish christening gowns are certain to stand out from the crowd due to the symbols included in them and the type of embellishments commonly found on them.

In general most christening gowns are pure white in nature. The embroidered symbols most often found on christening gowns are crosses; except that is on Irish christening gowns. There are many traditional Irish symbols that can be included in the design of a gown. You have your shamrocks to symbolize the Holy Trinity, the lucky four leaf clover through to bring hope and love beside luck and the Celtic knot. Occasionally you will also find a claddaugh which stands for love, friendship and loyalty.

Some Irish christening gowns also come with a robe, or a bow and a bonnet. These are not only for fashion purposes but for practical as well. Scout the area days before the baptism is going to be held. Will the place be cold? Will there be a lot of people or just a few select friends and family? Remember that your baby is still delicate and is pretty much sensitive to everything. If the christening ceremony is going to be held at a place where you think your baby will not be that comfortable, do get an Irish christening dress that comes with robe or a bonnet, as this will protect your child from the weather and will make her feel warm and cozy all throughout the celebration.

If your baby is a boy, opt for an uncomplicated Irish christening dress with a clean cut. Traditional styles usually consist of a simple neckline and a bit of lace at the sleeves and at the hem. Simple embroidery at the bottom is best, with Irish Celtic knots and shamrocks. Other common designs are the Irish Celtic cross embroidered across the chest, which will surely make your child look elegant.

Although the traditional Irish christening gown is made of pure white, if you want to put in some color, you can do so with the embroidery threads. Go for light green or off white for the shamrocks and clovers, and a light-blue for the Irish Celtic cross.
