To Sell or not to sell that is the question?? Kids & pets?

January 16th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Kids and Pets

Hi~
My husband & I are in the prosses of opening up a pet store,( Hope to get it up and running by Nov. 2006) but, we have a little bit of a problem. What's the problem?? The problem is that, the state of California has a law that states that pet stores can not sell any pets or pet related products to a child under the age of 18, with out their parent phyaically in the store with them at all times.
(notes from parents don't count, you as a parent have to be with them!) If your store gets caught by the state, It is a $250.00 fine per sale. Ouch!!! So, what should we do! On the one hand kids love pet stores and kids by things at pet stores. On the other hand, with insurance rates going through the roof if we let them in and the chance of being fined, it may not be worth it!! How do we let people know about this even before they get into the store?

As a parent, what do you think about this?? Suggestions or ideas

Kids under 18: What do you think about this?? Suggestions or idea
Because of insurance reasons and the state law we can't even allow kids to come in and look without there parent!
How many of you would be upset if we kicked out your kids if they were under 18??

And just to let you know a pet store is the #1 place in the nation for a child to be kidnaped in!!

You can post on your door at kid's eye height that children under 18 are welcome to bring their parents in to shop with them, and at parent's eye height that no children are allowed without a parent.

If the parent lives in Cali then they should already know that their children are not allowed in your store without them.

I would not sell without a parent being present just because the child may want a pet but the parent may not. Then you would not only get in trouble with the state but also the parents.

I would make up a sign to hang in the window stating that you cannot sell animals to anyone under 18 and also state why, briefly on the sign. I hope this helps.

I read your additional notes about that kids under 18 aren't even allowed in the store with a parent. That law really is bad but if it's the law, it's the law, you don't want to loose your business license.

This is a no brainer!!!! you either follow the laws or end up eventually losing your liscence. obviously all kids love pets but to sell ! to a kid w/o parental consent would most likely end up w/ the pet being returned or given away or even just discarded wherever. you must be responsible when selling a pet to anyone not just kids.!!!!!I as a parent would be outraged if a store owner let my minor child buy a pet that was not ok w/ me. for all you know their may be others in the home w/ allergies, etc… that could ause problems.abuse could also end up an issue w/o parental consent as some people are not pet lovers & don't care what happens to a pet. you most certainly need to follow the rules of your state as they're there for a reason.you could also end up w/ a law suite if a pet sold w/o permission harms someone!!!

Just don't sell anything to kids under 18. What's the problem? They can still come in and look. If they want to buy something they can come back with a parent. You can get a sign to hang on the door that explains this before hand.
